Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Steps:
What is a step? - A step or set of steps is how we refer to an access method to allow people to move between surfaces at different heights. Multiple steps together are also referred to as Steps, Stairs, Staircases and many other things besides! Steps or stairs usually have a handrail and are a gradient that can be easily climbed.
What is a tread? - This is another term for a step, and how we refer to our wooden block step units, which do not have handrail options. These are intended for use as part of a performance space or in areas with controlled access where handrails are not required.
Do I need a step from my stage? - This is of course up to you, and your access requirements. In the UK, a typical domestic step is around 6inches high. Most able-bodied people are able to manage a 6 inch step with relative ease, and if there is a handrail provided it gives options for anyone struggling. A lot of people could also step up to a 1ft high platform without much issue, and some higher than this - but maybe not if they were carrying something, or wearing a long dress / high heels, or nervous about a presentation or performance. It depends on the specific application that access is required for, as well as the people that need to be accommodated. From a safety and best practice perspective, the answer is usually yes.
How much space do I need to allow for steps? - Most of our steps are 10 inches deep per step. We'd then suggest you allow the width of the steps as a landing area to allow access to the steps. For example, if you are planning on using a 3ft set of LiteDeck steps, these have 6 steps, so will be around 60 inches deep. They are 4ft wide, so the calculation would be 4ft (48 inches) plus 60 inches, giving a a 108 inches total (9 foot) of space required.
Do all steps come with Handrails, and can I take them off? - Handrails are supplied with our LiteDeck, Modular and Adjustable Steps. They are not available for our wooden tread units. The supplied handrails with the modular steps are a structural part of the step, and must be fitted at all times. The supplied handrails with our LiteDeck and Adjustable Steps can be removed on one or both sides if required.
What is the best step for my conference stage - I need a colour coded finish? - If you need to dress the steps, we'd suggest the wooden treads are the easiest choice. They can be carpeted and fitted with step and end fascia to create a really smart finish.
I am building an outdoor stage - which steps are suitable? - The Adjustable Steps are the easiest steps to use outside, as their design allows for variations in ground level. LiteDeck and Modular steps can also be used, although may require levelling.
Can the steps be freestanding, or do they have to bolt to a LiteDeck module? - The LiteDeck and Wooden Tread steps are able to freestand if required. The modular steps and adjustable steps can only be used bolted into a LiteDeck module, as they need this for support.
Will my steps comply with all current regulations? - It depends which ones! It depends on lots of factors including the installation location, and how and by whom the steps are being used. This is a complicated topic, and we can help point you in the right direction.
I still have questions? - Steps can be complicated - but we have loads of experience in solving step related queries, get in touch with your questions and we'll do our best to help.
